Why ISVs should build on Kubernetes from an Early Stage

When building a new app or service, how to operate it at web scale with high availability is not usually the initial focus. ISVs are most likely to concentrate effort on building the right application for your target customer. If you’re going to market for a startup, you need to build a customer base before scaling, otherwise, who are you scaling for? Operating at scale is not a primary focus.

Once ISVs have designed apps for specific hardware, modernizing and moving to the cloud can result in a fair amount of work. For this reason, if you’re building a new app today, it might be worth taking a closer look at making it cloud-native and using Kubernetes from the jump.

Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) offers serverless Kubernetes, an integrated continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) experience, and enterprise-grade security and governance. ISVs can unite development and operations teams on a single platform to rapidly build, deliver, and scale applications with confidence.

The effort to set up Kubernetes is less than you think and certainly less than the effort it would take to refactor your app later on to support containerization.

Managed Kubernetes does the heavy lifting

Managed Kubernetes services such as Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) allow you to set up your own clusters in minutes. Once that is set up, there is very little left to do once you begin scaling. Any additional resource allocation is easy and things like fault tolerance, load balancing and traffic shaping are already handled.

Accelerate containerized application development

Easily define, deploy, debug, and upgrade even the most complex Kubernetes applications, and automatically containerize your applications. ISVs can also use modern application development to accelerate time to market.

By adding a full CI/CD pipeline to your AKS clusters with automated routine tasks, ISVs can set up a canary deployment strategy in just a few clicks. ISVs can also detect failures early and optimize pipelines with deep traceability into deployments.

Increased operational efficiency

ISVs can rely on built-in automated provisioning, repair, monitoring, and scaling. Get up and running quickly and minimize infrastructure maintenance.

  • Get started easily with smart defaults and create scenario-specific cluster configurations in just a few clicks.
  • Easily provision fully managed clusters with Prometheus-based monitoring capabilities.
  • Use Azure Advisor to optimize your Kubernetes deployments with real-time, personalized recommendations.
  • Save on costs by using deeply discounted capacity with Azure Spot.
  • Elastically add compute capacity with serverless Kubernetes in seconds.
  • Achieve higher availability and protect applications from datacenter failures using availability zones.

Run any workload in the cloud, at the edge, or as a hybrid

Orchestrate any type of workload running in the environment of your choice with Azure Kubernetes. Whether you want to move .NET applications to Windows Server containers, modernize Java applications in Linux containers, or run microservices applications in the public cloud, at the edge, in hybrid environments, or in your own datacenter through AKS on Azure Stack HCI.

For ISVs choosing to migrate to a robust and autoscaling serverless Azure environment and building Kubernetes applications, they can achieve unprecedented scale and growth. Reach more customers and scale faster while managing quality and customer feedback.
